An ITIN is an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number. These identification numbers are 9 digits long. Only the IRS can assign these numbers and they must be applied for by an Certifying Acceptance Agent.

Certifying Acceptance Agents are entities the Internal Revenue Service uses to assist with ITIN applications. This Includes foreign individuals who do not qualify for an SSN (Social Security Number) but still need a taxpayer Identification number.
